Our Doctors at Eyesthetica

Eyesthetica is comprised of Michael Burnstine, MD, David Samimi, MD, Christopher C. Lo, MD, Yao Wang, MD and Jordan R. Conger, MD. All of the Eyesthetica doctors hold appointments at the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California: Dr. Burnstine is a Clinical Professor and Dr. Samimi is an Assistant Professor.

Eyesthetica and the USC Roski Eye Institute house two of the 56 fellowship programs in Oculofacial Plastic Surgery approved by the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) in the United States.

Eyesthetica physicians also provide coverage for ocular and orbital trauma at California Hospital Medical Center, a level 2 trauma center, and LA County + USC Medical Center, a level 1 trauma center, both in Los Angeles.

All the doctors at Eyesthetica are board-certified in Ophthalmology, fellowship-trained, and certified in Oculoplastic Surgery. The anatomy around the eyes and orbit is both delicate and complex. The specialty of Oculoplastic Surgery is an art that combines the meticulous detailed microsurgical techniques of ophthalmology with the aesthetic understanding of plastic surgery. We are experts in the highly specialized area of plastic surgery and cosmetic injectables for the area around the eyes and face.

Why Choose an Oculoplastic Surgeon?

Your face is continuously on display, for all to see. When choosing a surgeon for cosmetic eyelid and face surgery, it is important to consider the physician’s training. Oculoplastic Surgery (also known as Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Oculofacial Plastic Surgery) is a subspecialty that focuses on cosmetic and reconstructive aspects of the eyelids, lacrimal (tear) system, the orbit (the bony cavity surrounding the eye), and the adjacent face. An oculoplastic surgeon spends the first 4 years after medical school mastering care of the delicate eye and surrounding tissues, gaining certification as an ophthalmologist. After this already specialized training, an oculoplastic surgeon with membership in the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery completes an additional 2 years of specialized plastic surgery training. This is more specialized eyelid and upper face surgical training than any other type of cosmetic surgeon. Combining knowledge of how to manage the delicate eye with detailed plastic surgery knowledge for the eyelids, an oculoplastic surgeon offers the very best experience to ensure the safest and most cosmetically appealing results after surgery. When you consult with an Oculoplastic Surgeon, you a consulting with a true surgical eyelid expert. Why trust your eyes to anyone else?

What is the American Society of Ophthalmic
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS)?

The main organizing body for Oculoplastic Surgery is the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). ASOPRS members must complete an approved fellowship training program. About 20 surgeons are trained each year in this field. These surgeons are meticulously trained in cosmetic and reconstructive eyelid and facial surgery during their 2-year fellowships. Furthermore, ASOPRS members must pass a written and oral examination and write a scientific thesis of original research. Only after all of these steps have been completed is a surgeon asked to become a member of ASOPRS. Around the world, there are approximately 500 such members who have passed these rigid criteria for certification. All of the Eyesthetica doctors have completed these requirements and all are a full member of ASOPRS.
