Improve Droopy Eyelid with
Ptosis Surgery
YOUNG AS YOU FEEL?
Ptosis
Functioning eyelids are crucial to frame your eyes and protect your vision. Eyelid droopiness also referred to as ptosis (pronounced “toe-sis”) is the sagging of one or both upper eyelids. In “eyelid ptosis,” the lower edge of the eyelid that eyelashes are connected to, descends to cover part of one’s vision. Our doctors can correct this problem by repairing the muscle that supports the eyelid. The goal is restoring your eyelid position to create an alert, refreshed look that still feels natural.

Is Ptosis Surgery The Procedure For Me?
Patients with ptosis may or may not be fully aware of the extent of their condition, and we recommend a comprehensive evaluation with our doctors. In mild to moderate cases, the droopy eyelid causes a tired or aged appearance. Others may tell you that you look sleepy or have “bedroom eyes.” You may feel like your eyelids may feel heavy or you may have a headache from elevating your eyebrows to see. In more severe cases, the eyelids can even block your field of vision, which you may notice during activities such as reading, watching TV, or driving. When you visit our office, we will perform a test to determine if the droopy eyelids are affecting your vision and will rule out any other medical problems.
Our Approach to Ptosis Surgery
Our doctors at Eyesthetica approach ptosis surgery in a way that prioritizes the health of your eyes and quality of your vision. The different treatment options for ptosis repair depend on the desired amount of eyelid elevation and the type of ptosis being treated. The doctors at Eyesthetica have been pioneers in the field of minimally invasive ptosis repair, developing modifications to ptosis procedures designed to optimize comfort and postoperative aesthetic result.
Typically, patients with minimal ptosis can receive improvement with internal (“scarless”) ptosis repair. For patients with moderate ptosis, external approaches with an incision hidden in the eyelid crease offer the ability to raise the eyelid higher. Patients with severely weakened eyelid muscles are usually best served by an upper eyelid sling surgery. These surgeries connect the eyelid to the brow and allow eyelid elevation to be controlled by the forehead muscle. Come for an evaluation at Eyesthetica to see which approach best suits your eyelids!
At Eyesthetica, you can rest assured that your procedure will be performed by an expert. In fact, our surgeons authored the latest guide dedicated to teaching medical professionals about oculofacial plastic surgery.
Ptosis Surgery and Recovery
Ptosis surgery is an outpatient surgery that allows you to return home on the same day of surgery. Surgery itself generally takes around an hour. Bruising is usually noticeable for up to two weeks; however, most patients return to work within the first week.
Cold compresses are used for bruising and swelling. Discomfort is minimal and the eyes are not patched closed after surgery. If placed, sutures are removed in 5-9 days. The incision is placed in the lid crease so as to be minimally visible and this scar will heal and fade over time. For the first few weeks, there may be temporary changes in your eyesight,
Strenuous activity such as yoga, sit-ups or weight lifting can resume in two weeks. You can expect final results to show within 2-3 months after surgery. Once healed, you can expect to have open, more awake looking eyes and improved vision!
Related Procedures
Droopiness of the upper eyelid is usually a distinct condition from upper lid excess skin and wrinkles. However, ptosis can sometimes occur in patients that also have excess upper or lower eyelid tissue and would benefit from receiving a blepharoplasty at the same time!
